Especially Suzy. Yup. Suzy.
But apparently, my level of Korean engrossment is merely child's play to some of the more hardcore fans. People who are a part of these fandoms, as in fanatic + kingdom (I'm not even kidding), spend most of their time nitpicking on the smallest things regarding their favorite Korean idols, often living in a fantasy that their oppas (what females call their older brothers or lovers) will one day swoop down to Earth from the heavens to take them away.
That entire sentence above may not completely be an exaggeration.
I know I've gone crazy seeing some of my favorite KPOP stars (I'm looking at you Suzy and Jiyoung) but fandoms take it to another level. A lot of issue crop up amongst these fandoms, most notably: a 'real' relationship forming between themselves and their Korean idols. Fandoms are also where people write fanfiction of the pairings of who they want to ship. All these are words which may seem strange when used in a normal everyday context but believe me, in KPOP fandoms, they take it very, very seriously.
I'll be giving a few examples below, to show you how truly terrifying KPOP fandoms can be. Because this is a sensitive issue to most KPOP fans, I'm going to only use one person in my examples. This person, I believe, is strong enough to take whatever I'm going to say about her. She's my cousin, the KPOP fanatic, Kimmy. She can't deny it because a cursory sweep of her Facebook wall yields enough evidence to put a CSI team to shame.
This is what you should be expecting.
Possessiveness
"My husband is coming to see meeeee!" I heard a girl shout at the GDAs, "OPPPPPPPPAAAAAAAA! SARANGHAE!!!" This is, sadly, not made up. Many KPOP fans think that the bond between them and their idols are real, and they indulge in that fantasy of being married to them. Newsflash: Not only are you not married to your oppa, he probably doesn't even know you exist. It's harsh news, but it's true. This screencap off a tumblr post says it all.
"My oppa is better than your oppa" is another famous argument between crazed fans who defend their idols to the bitter end. I got this screencap from a forum, and I find it incredibly true in this scenario.
Shipping
I have absolutely nothing against shipping a couple. In fact, if you read any of the Running Mondays posts, I am all for shipping the Monday Couple on Running Man. But some fans take it to the next level. For a crazed shipper, they will ship their idols as though they were real. They will sob and cry and wish that the couple they shipped got together in real life.
Some go to the extent of writing long drawn fanfictions which may or may not include erotic moments and/or gay references. Considering that most of these are written by preteen girls, I can only curl up in a corner.
Crying
I don't know why but it seems like a lot of fandoms have people who love crying.
It'll be like "OMG JUST READ THIS FANFIC! SO GOOD! CRYING!" or "MY OPPA JUST SANG TO ME BRB CRYING SO BAD!" It's just....weird.
Miscellaneous
Fandoms have intense preoccupation with their idols' body parts. Just...just read for yourself.
I'm sure EXO's Chen would be so proud to know that he almost killed an 18 year old by taking off his shirt.
Just....I don't know anymore.
Sasaeng fans
These are what you call the craziest of the crazies. These fans are willing to go all out to meet their idols, including invasion of privacy and lying on the road just so they can occupy the same spot that their idols have stepped on. Y'know, just something that an obsessive stalker might do to land him/herself in prison.
I only wish I were kidding.
This is a piece brilliantly written by someone whom I can only label as crazy (it's not Kimmy, because she's not even at this level yet).
The only question I'd ask is what are you doing outside of an institution?
And for more creepy, here are two articles which detail what Sasaeng fans are willing to get into for the sake of their idols:
Someone please send this poor girl to a hospital. She's broken.
As much as I love KPOP, I hardly see myself going to this extent of worshiping the Korean idols. If I ever do start exhibiting symptoms, please immediately send me to a rehab or a mental institution so that I will not rush to the nearest Korean celebrity's house and take a massive dump on their front door.
Cheerios!
